2007 REMY Awards: Baths under $20,000

Project Overview:
The following is half of a His and Hers two bath project. The submission is of the Hall Bath Renovation (Hers):

The original 1960 hall bathroom featured an “L” shaped double bowl vanity.

Project Overview:
Instead of spending more money for less space and moving to maintenance free living these owners made the decision to remain in their lovely 1960’s 2 ½ bath ranch style home. These homeowners decided to renovate both of their full bathrooms with HIS and HER baths in mind. Working with our designer each of them took an active part in the design and selection of all the cabinetry, tile, plumbing fixtures, and accessories to complete their individual baths.

Objectives:
Our goal was to create additional space and update all fixtures.

The original L- shaped two sink vanity offered very little room to move around. The wall holding the angled second sink had also created a narrow entry to the toilet and tub area and hindered natural light coming in from a back wall window. The other space hindrance was the wall mounted toilet facing the tub which did not allow for ample leg room.

Design Solutions:
The L-shaped two sink vanity was removed, which allowed us to widen the entry of the tub and toilet area. The original toilet for some unknown reason was wall mounted facing the bath tub. In addition, a plumbing chase to enclose the toilet vent shortened the leg room by 4 inches. This created very limited leg room. The vent relocated inside the wall, the toilet relocated and centered under the window facing the doorway. What a HUGE difference. The result created an open walk-way which allowed more space to maneuver, unlimited leg room for the toilet area and natural lighting from the window.

Interior Design Selections:
This client wanted a very neutral tone on tone color scheme. The focal point at the entrance was the 12x12 Italian porcelain floor tile, by Grespania, color Miami Beige. The tile was installed on the diagonal which instantly invites you in. We selected an off white vanity cabinet, by Aristokraft Nantucket Select, with center doors and three drawers on each side which gave her a total of six drawers for organized storage. The counter top need to be understated as not to clash with our tile but yet make a statement of it’s own. We selected CORIAN – color Tumbleweed with an under-mounted white porcelain sink.

Lighting:
The client wanted a lot of light. For the new 60” single sink vanity we installed one overhead light fixtures and two separate sconces on each side of the single sink. All these fixtures were installed within the glass mirror that surrounded the vanity on three sides. The lighting was perhaps a little over-kill, however, she could always adjust the wattage to fit her needs.

Plumbing Fixtures:
Sink, shower and tub fixtures were all stainless steal by Delta. The new tub and toilet were by Kohler.
