Runner Up

Project Overview:
Our clients purchased this 22 year old Ambassador Homes passive solar home in early 2006. The home has a first level entry with a loft, bath room, and two bedrooms.

The lower level is the main living area with a two story fireplace with an open floor plan. Living area contains the kitchen, dining area, great room, office and master suite. The master bathroom suite was the first area chosen by our client to update.

The Objective:
Create a design that would compliment the overall prairie style theme though out the existing home. Increase additional storage, enlarge the shower’s footprint, and improve the overall lighting. The original foot print of room could only be slightly modified due to the concrete walls and floor. The second floor’s air supply utilized ceiling sofits that visually restricted the vanity appearance. The tub needed to be enlarged and the planter box was wasted space.

The Design:
The client was willing to spend a little more to accomplish a distinctive design and was referred to an interior designer to assist them in selecting innovative items. It was determined to remove as much of the ceiling sofits as possible and enlarge the bath and shower areas.

Shower:
The existing 48x32 inch shower was enlarged to a spacious 60x36 inch size. The shower floor and curb was built utilizing the Kerdi system for a permanent leak free enclosure. Euro style shower doors added visual depth.

Soaking Tub:
The existing cultured marble tub area was enlarged by Kohler’s Mariposa 6' BubbleMassage bath which provides a focal point. The tub features bubble massage therapy as well as a lighted keypad for easy adjustment of all features for increased levels of comfort. An oil rubbed bronze roman tub faucet completed the finishing touch.

Floating Cabinetry:
Dura Supreme offered a floating vanity and linen tower made of quarter sawn red oak with a flat panel Moda door style stained in a dark coco brown. The hammered oil-rubbed bronze hardware complimented the cabinetry and lighting fixtures. To accentuate the floating cabinetry, in direct lighting was placed under each of the cabinets. Again the coco brown undertones in the oak grain stain of the cabinetry coordinated well with the red oak trim and doors which remained. The linen tower was accented with beveled glass and an overhead light inside the top shelf.

Countertop:
A hand selected slab of Marron Rain Forrest marble was fabricated for the countertop. The brown veining and burnish ginger and emerald tones compliment the oak stained doors and trim which remained. It also brought the feel of outdoors into the room.

Copper Oceana Glass under mount lavatory sinks were chosen to reflect the same undertones of the counter. Wide spread faucets in the oil rubbed bronze provides continuity.

Lighting:
A partial removal of the sofits above the vanity allowed for an increase of the height of the mirror. Two transitional style oil rubbed bronze sconces by Minka/Lavery were chosen to complete the lighting requirements. These sconces were mounted onto the mirror for a modernized design. The under cabinet lighting enhanced the floating cabinetry.

Finishes:
The walls and ceiling are finished in a desert tan. A neutral glazed ceramic 12x12 tile was selected for the flooring, tub surround and shower walls. A coordinating deco tile with accents of emerald and gold glass tiles were selected to accentuate the reflections of the Oceana glass lavatories and marbled vanity. These deco tiles also outlined the vanity mirror and trimmed the tub surround and inside the shower that completed the design continuity.
